The UAE rugby community will have the chance to gain tips and advice from three former international players who will be hosting a coaching clinic at Dubai Sports City (DSC) next Wednesday.
Brian Lima (Samoa), Carlos Spencer (New Zealand) and Shane Williams (Wales) will be imparting their expertise and wisdom to those in attendance, before lacing up the gloves 48 hours later to compete in the charity boxing night Fighting Chance.
Former Samoa star Lima, who earned the nickname ‘The Chiropractor’ for his bone-crunching tackles, will be teaching the art of defending, former All Black fly-half Spencer will provide kicking tips, and ex-Wales wing Williams will be revealing the secrets to his attacking flair.
DSC General Manager Maqbul Dudhia is delighted the three rugby heroes are on hand to provide some coaching and has encouraged anyone with an interest in rugby to head down and get involved.
“The coaching clinic is a fantastic opportunity for people to get close to three outstanding players,” he said. “The night is open to all chiropractic clinic ages and we encourage players, coaches and fans to get involved and spend a bit of time in the presence of these great athletes.”
The rugby union legends will then take part in a charity amateur boxing event two nights later along with a host of top international sportsmen and women, to raise funds for Richard Holland; a South African Dubai-resident, who was knocked off his bike and sustained life-changing injuries while training for an Iron Man challenge last October.
Along with Spencer, Lima and Williams, other stars on the boxing card include Conrad Jantjes and Bolla Conradie, the former Springbok backs, England rugby league stars Lee Radford and Sean Long, Epi Taione, the former Tonga rugby league player and ex-British and Irish Lions and Ireland forward Shane Byrne.
The fight-night action also features former England One-Day International cricket captain Adam Hollioake and Non Evans, the Wales women’s rugby union all-time leading points scorer, who also competed for her country in three separate sports at the Commonwealth Games – judo, weightlifting and wrestling.
Dubai Sports City will also be hosting the Fighting Chance boxing night at their Football Dome, and Dudhia added: “The Fighting Chance night is something we are all looking forward to. It is for an outstanding cause.
“It will provide a great night of action and entertainment with a host of top sports stars entering the ring.
“The Football Dome has only been open for a short time but already it is staging football and touch rugby and with a night of boxing to come it showcases the variety of sports we can host.”
The rugby coaching clinic will take place at the DSC Academies Campus for two hours from 7-9pm on Wednesday May 22.
Tickets are available for AED120 and can be purchased by calling 04 448 1555 or 056 791 9780 or by emailing
