Making the most of massage therapy

(How close to my run/walk) A: Massage therapy can be provided both pre-event (ie. before your run/walk) and post-event, depending on your specific needs and goals. For example, pre-event massage may be used immediately before an event to stimulate targeted areas and assist ROM. Post-event massage may be used to reduce muscle soreness associated with DOMS (delayed onset muscles soreness) and feeling of fatigue. Some studies suggest the best effect is when the massage is given within two hours after the activity. If you have recently suffered an injury or are dealing with chronic problems, then you should seek more thorough examination and treatment in the weeks/ months before your event. Q: What’s the best kind of massage therapy for an InTraining participant? A: Techniques are varied depending on whether the treatment is pre or post-event, and whether or not there is injury. Massage can also be applied to purposefully have a stimulating or a relaxation effect. Your registered massage therapist (RMT) would be the best person to determine what massage and manual therapy techniques will be most effective for your individual needs. Q: Should I just focus on feet and legs? Full body? A: That is a personal decision based on your reason for seeking massage and as described above, but there are certainly benefits to both!

The Magic of Massage Therapy

An Orange County massage therapist was arrested Thursday on suspicion of using his practice to sexually assault three women. Michael James Jackson, 52, was arrested at his home in Fullerton after a yearlong investigation, according to the Brea Police Department. Jackson, who operated a massage therapy business called On the Spot Therapy, allegedly committed the assaults during appointments at the victims homes, Brea police said in a news release. The investigation was sparked after a 38-year-old Brea resident reported that Jackson had inappropriately touched her during a message appointment in her home in October 2012, Brea police said. During their investigation, police discovered two other possible victims who claimed Jackson had assaulted them, also under the guise of performing a massage in their homes, according to police. One of the women, a 31-year-old from Huntington Beach, was allegedly assaulted in 2012. The other, a 48-year-old Newport Beach woman, said she was attacked in 2000. A search of Jacksons home in December 2012 allegedly uncovered images of child pornography, police said. Jackson was being held in lieu of $1-million bail.
